Hard As A Rock Joke

Posted June 11th, 2008 at 9:31 am in Dirty Jokes

An old man woke up in the middle of the night and found, to his utter astonishment, that his pecker was as hard as a rock for the first time in two years. He shook his wife by the shoulder until she woke up and showed her his enormous boner. “Check this out!” he happily exclaimed. “What do you think we should do with it?” With one eye open, his wife replied, “Well, now that you’ve got all the wrinkles out, now would be a good time to wash it.”

Slipknot is an American heavy metal band from Des Moines, Iowa. Formed in 1995, the group was founded by percussionist Shawn Crahan and bassist Paul Gray, after several lineup changes in their early days the band consisted of nine members for the greater part of their tenure—Sid Wilson, Paul Gray, Joey Jordison, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Craig Jones, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson, and Corey Taylor. However, the death of Paul Gray on May 24, 2010 left the band with only eight remaining members.
Slipknot is well known by their attention-grabbing image, aggressive music style and their energetic and chaotic live shows. The band had somewhat of a meteoric rise to success following the release of their self-titled debut album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album Iowa further increased the band's popularity. After breaking for their first hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) and once again in 2008 with their fourth album All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200 charts. The band has also released one live album and four DVDs. As of May 2010, Slipknot has sold over 14 million records worldwide.
SlipknOne of the most popular Skrewdriver albums that began Ian's trek into a more "metal" sound.

Ian Stuart Donaldson was born in Poulton-le-Fylde and was raised in Blackpool, where he founded the band Skrewdriver in 1976. Skrewdriver was formed from the ashes of Tumbling Dice (a cover band who played songs by The Rolling Stones, Free and The Who). At first, Skrewdriver had a punk image, and they experimented with their look before eventually adopting a skinhead image. The band had a reputation for attracting violence at their concerts (Bob Geldof was reportedly knocked unconscious at one Skrewdriver show), but they did not openly promote any political views.[1]

Although both Skrewdriver and the band Sham 69 had skinhead followings and racist fans early in their careers, Skrewdriver failed to get the same mainstream promotion that Sham 69 did. Unlike Skrewdriver, Sham 69 denounced their racist fans, and even performed at Rock Against Racism concerts. [2][3]

After the original Skrewdriver lineup parted ways in 1979, Stuart reformed the band and began to write songs for a white power skinhead audience. The new version of Skrewdriver openly promoted far right groups such as the National Front and Combat 18, raising funds for them (and affiliated organizations) through their White Noise Records label. As a result, Skrewdriver became known for its involvement in the white nationalist political movement and its associated music genre, Rock Against Communism.

Donaldson, along with Nicky Crane, founded Blood and Honour, a neo-Nazi network that distributes white power music and organizes concerts. Stuart became leader of two other bands, White Diamond and The Klansmen, and he released several solo albums. Along with Skrewdriver guitarist Stigger, he recorded the albums Patriotic Ballads volumes 1 and 2, which included covers of traditional folk songs such as The Green Fields of France. Donaldson's voice also appeared in the song The Invisible Empire (whose title refers to the Ku Klux Klan) on the 1989 album See you in Valhalla by neo-Nazi rock band No Remorse.

Donaldson was one of the principal organisers of a white power concert near Waterloo station in London in 1992. Anti-Fascist Action organized a protest, which resulted in physical confrontations. In July 1993, Donaldson and Skrewdriver played their final concert in Waiblingen, Germany. The program, Kreuzritter für Deutschland, was organized by Andreas J. Voigt. Donaldson died in 1993 in a fatal car accident in Derbyshire.

IF YOU ARE A FAN OF SLASH YOU CAN CHECK OUT THEIR SITE JUST CLICK HERE
Velvet Revolver began as "The Project", a venture by Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum to find a new lead singer. On rhythm guitar, they initially worked with Izzy Stradlin, and they were offered to open for The Rolling Stones but Slash, Duff and Matt wanted to have a lead singer; after this Izzy became less involved. They would find their second guitarist in the form of Dave Kushner, who had previously played with McKagan in "Loaded" prior to this project. For many months, the four of them listened to demo tapes of potential lead singers, a monotonous process (documented by VH1). The band recorded a song with Sebastian Bach (Skid Row), a long time friend of Guns N' Roses, but this line-up did not last. In his autobiography simply titled Slash, Slash reported that this combination was unsuccessful due to the fact that on one side, it sounded too much like Skid Roses , and on the other, Sebastian Bach was concerned that this project would interfere with his relationship with Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose. The main riff from this Skid Roses song would later be found on the 2010 Slash solo album. After many months, Slash and the others were almost ready to give up. However, Stone Temple Pilots had recently imploded, allowing lead singer Scott Weiland to volunteer to record a song with the band. Realizing there was chemistry between each member, Weiland officially joined the band in 2003.[citation needed]hard rock cartoons, hard rock cartoon, hard rock picture, hard rock pictures, hard rock image, hard rock images, hard rock illustration, hard rock illustrations
Velvet Revolver played several concerts in the summer of that year and released their first single, "Set Me Free" as part of the soundtrack for The Hulk. In June 2004, they released their first studio album, Contraband. A 19-month long tour ensued, as the album went double platinum and re-established Slash as a mainstream performer. After the tour concluded, he and his bandmates took a lengthy break before beginning work on their second album. In July 2007, Velvet Revolver released the critically acclaimed Libertad, a follow-up to their multi-platinum debut. Following their second studio album, Velvet Revolver also began a second tour. On March 20, 2008 Weiland announced to their audience that it would be Velvet Revolver's final tour. Matt Sorum posted a message on his website the next day discussing the band's situation and said, "You could tell who was unhappy last night" and "some people in this business don't realize how great of a life they have".[20] Weiland shot back by telling Blabbermouth.net, "Well, first of all, the state of my family affairs is really none of his business, since he is too immature to have a real relationship, let alone children. So don't attempt to stand in a man's shoes when you haven't walked his path." On April 1, 2008 Weiland officially split from Velvet Revolver.

What On May 31, 2006, Slash was joined by Rob Zombie on vocals, another former Guns N' Roses axeman Gilby Clarke on rhythm guitar, Scott Ian of Anthrax on bass, Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee on drums, and surprise guest Ace Frehley of Kiss for a rendition of God of Thunder. The occasion was a one-time supergroup tribute to Kiss for the VH1 Rock Honors Award Show.

Slash is a playable character in the video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, and his likeness appears on the game cover. Slash did motion capture with RedOctane to record his movements for the game. Beating Slash in a one-on-one competition (playing an original composition he recorded solely for the game), unlocks him as a playable character. Beating him in this challenge leads to the player and Slash playing the master track of "Welcome to the Jungle" as an encore song.[21][22]
In 2007, Slash performed with Paulina Rubio on the hit Latin single "Nada Puede Cambiarme". On March 12, 2007. Slash and Velvet Revolver paid tribute to Van Halen by inducting the band into the Rock N' Roll hall of fame. The band also played two covers.
Slash appears on the cover of Guitar World for their July 2007 issue, the "20 year salute to Appetite for Destruction", entitled "The Cat In The Hat Is Back". It pictures Slash holding his guitar with a snake crawling up the neck.
Slash made numerous contributions to The Heroin Diaries: A Year in the Life of a Shattered Rock Star by Nikki Sixx, published September 18, 2007.[23] He also played guitar with them at Crüe Fest.
An autobiography titled simply Slash was published on October 30, 2007.[24] It was co-written with Anthony Bozza. Slash will also be appearing in the HBO book and Documentary The Black List Vol. 1, he can be seen in a portrait on the cover of the book. It was announced by Kerrang! Magazine that Slash was going to appear on Ace Frehley's next solo album.[25]
Slash planned to record a solo album after the third Velvet Revolver album, but after the departure of singer Scott Weiland and time-consuming searches for a new singer for the band, he decided to record a solo album first. On September 30, 2008, he began recording demos for the upcoming album. Slash was quoted saying that the work alone in the studio on the solo album was "cathartic", and that he really enjoyed working alone in the studio. He also said he plans to bring a different singer for each song on the album, and that he has a list of guests to appear on the album, and most of them are already committed, though he refused to tell who are those guests. Rumored singers for the project include Lenny Kravitz, Sebastian Bach, Alice Cooper, Vince Neil, and past Guns N' Roses bandmates Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan.[26]
According to Slash's wife during an interview with Rockerrazzi.com, both Ozzy Osbourne and Fergie will make appearances on Slash's upcoming solo album, saying, "It's going to be Slash and friends, with everyone from Ozzy [Osbourne] to Fergie."[27] Other musicians set to appear on the release include Josh Freese, Chris Chaney, Travis Barker, M. Shadows and Jason Bonham.[28] In 2009, he played the guitar parts on the film score of The Wrestler, composed by Clint Mansell.
On June 30, 2009, Slash performed his first solo show, at the Quart Festival in Norway. His band was composed of Franky Perez (Scars On Broadway) on vocals, John 5 (Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson) on guitar, Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction) on bass, Jason Bonham (Foreigner) on drums and Teddy Andreadis on keyboards. Special guests included Chris Cornell, Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie and Ron Wood.[29] His touring band will be fronted by Alter Bridge vocalist Myles Kennedy, who provided vocals on Slash's songs "Back From Cali" and "Starlight" from his self-titled debut solo album.
Slash's guitar solo is featured in Rihanna's 2009 album Rated R''s fourth single Rockstar 101.
Slash's self titled album recently was certified "platinum" in New Zealand with sales over 35,000.
On June 20, 2010 Alice Cooper jammed on stage with Slash in Paris over Cooper's classic song "School's Out".[30]
Slash was the honoree at the 2010 Sunset Strip Music Festival, on August 26, 2010, which included members of the West Hollywood City Council and Mayor John Heilman presenting Slash with the official plaque for "Slash Day."[31]
Slash appeared on stage at the Arena, Stockholm, 2 November 2010, accompanying Alter Bridge on the track "Rise Today".[32]
On November 23, 2010, Slash was interviewed on the MTV UK show "Gonzo" with host Alexa Chung, where he said that Myles Kennedy is going to be the sole vocalist on his next solo album. He has also confirmed that he plans to work with Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie, with whom he worked on the single "Beautiful Dangerous" from his solo album, again in the future, and that another song he recorded with her during the sessions for his solo album will appear on her next solo album.[33] He briefly played a guitar riff from Sweet Child o' Mine at the Black Eyed Peas' 2011 Super Bowl halftime performance.[34]
In an interview with MusicRadar, Slash confirmed that the band he has been touring with would be the same band to perform on his next record. He also said that it will be less of an actual solo album and more of a collaboration album with Kennedy, and that he is not sure if the album will be billed as Slash or a new name entirely.[35]
is Christian 80's Metal?

There are many genres and sub-genres of Rock music. Heavy Metal is a genre. 80's Metal is a sub-genre. Some 80's Metal Rockers were also Christians. Some of these Rockers rocked for Jesus. Their music is referred to as 80's Christian Metal.

History

During the 80's, Christian Metal was also called "Righteous Metal" and "Heavenly Metal". In the 80's, Christian Metal was, and to a lesser extent is still known as "White Metal". Christian Metal was called "White Metal" in contrast to "Black Metal" because "...the music serves the purpose of offering a positive alternative or counterbalance to secular metal music which is known for its generally dark message."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_metal

Today

Melodic Metal, or Melodic Power Metal are sub-genres of rock music that are so closely related to 80's Metal, that these newer Christian bands are sometimes included on this site.

White Skull: Forever Fight

White Skull: Forever Fight

Heavy/Power Metal
Rating: 3.75/5.0
Italy's White Skull presses on with their eighth full length release, 'Forever Fight.' More recognized in Europe than the shores of America, White Skull's latest work is a monument to their tradition of producing both solid and epic heavy metal within the power genre. That is to say, on one hand, there is nothing really new on 'Forever Fight;' simply solid heavy metal with thrash, power, and melodic elements fortified with some assertive female vocals and sizzling guitar work. On the other hand, well, there's nothing really new here. I think I said that already. White Skull is another case where we must not confuse redundancy with consistency: they're just doing what the know best and doing it well.
Even with the expectation of consistency, White Skulls excels where the arrangement leans more towards epic melodic heavy and power metal as on 'Feel My Rage' and 'Attle And Bleda.' On both of these the true stars are composition and sterling guitar solos. Honorable mentions also go to the near epic, more expected pieces 'Boudicca's Speech' and 'A Mothers Revenge,' where both benefit from more melodic and dynamic progressions within the arrangements. On the down side, some songs are simply average like the thrashy but bland 'Forever Fight' or the straight up heavy metal of 'Spy.' However, the greatest inconsistency on 'Forever Fight' comes from Elisa 'Over' De Palma vocals which are either dead on (Boudicca's Speech or Spy, for example) or miserably unintelligible (Forever Fight, Etzel).
Overall, White Skull delivers as expected: no more, less. 'Forever Fight' is standard melodic heavy power metal which will neither disappointment nor surprisehard rock cartoons, hard rock cartoon, hard rock picture, hard rock pictures, hard rock image, hard rock images, hard rock illustration, hard rock illustrations

Zakk Wylde (born Jeffrey Phillip Wielandt; January 14, 1967 in Bayonne, New Jersey) is an American musician, songwriter, and occasional actor who is best known as the former guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne and founder of the heavy metal band Black Label Society. He was the lead guitarist and vocalist in Pride & Glory, who released one self-titled album in 1994 before disbanding. As a solo artist he released Book of Shadows in 1996.

[edit] Live performances

  • On August 1, 1993, at Great Woods Amphitheatre in Mansfield, MA, Wylde appeared on stage with the Allman Brothers on lead guitar since Dickey Betts was unable to make the show, and they needed a guitarist at the last minute. This show is documented on the bootleg "Zakk Goes Wylde".
  • Wylde is a New York Yankees fan. He performed the National Anthem on the electric guitar during a New York Rangers game in October 2005. He has also played the anthem at Los Angeles Kings and Dodgers games. A video of a Kings performance is included as an extra feature, on the DVD Boozed, Broozed, and Broken-Boned.
  • On February 1, 2007 Wylde and Nick Catanese began a tour of acoustic shows at the Hard Rock Cafe in various cities across North America. Although Catanese had to leave mid-tour due to unspecified personal reasons, Wylde continued to play shows alone. He performed several songs, on both the acoustic guitar and keyboard. The tour was eventually canceled due to unspecified reasons.

RR: When did you first start playing guitar and was it the first instrument you ever picked up?
JR: Yeah, my parents had an old nylon string acoustic guitar that I would mess around on which I think had like two stings on it when I was like, 12/13 years old and then I begged them from the time I was 12 until I was probably 14 or 15 for a guitar and they got me this Memphis- not any brand name or anything- like a Les Paul Jr copy, like a double cut away. more...

Judas Priest - British Steel -30th anniversary

By Thomas S. Orwat, Jr.
Last year, heavy metal legends Judas Priest celebrated the 30th anniversary of their break through, classic album "British Steel" by performing the record in its entirety during their summer tour. For any one that witnesses the show, they surely would boast about how amazing it was. Trust me, I witness one of the shows myself and it was an incredible and astonishing metal event unlike anything before. Now if you were unable to catch this tour, you can now watch it in the comforts of your own home. The British Steel - 30th anniversary edition not only includes a remastered version of the CD with two bonus tracks, but also a DVD of the entire British Steel 16 track concert filmed at the Seminole Hard Rock Arena in Hollywood, Florida.
On the DVD, the band rips through the British Steel release with note for note perfection with passion and energy just like they did 30 years ago. Guitar gods Glenn Tipton and KK Downing prove why they are masters of their craft with lightning fast leads and infectious riffs. This concert DVD clearly shows why they are regarded as the most influential axe-duo of all time. In addition, vocalist Rob Halford is still as spectacular as ever. What else can be said about him, he is the master of metal and in a class all of his own. In addition to the" British Steel" tracks, Priest also performs "The Ripper," "Prophecy" (from their most recent cd "Nostradamus") "Hell Patrol", "Victims of Change", "Freewheel Burning", "Diamonds and Rust" and their big 1982 hit "You Got Another Thing Coming."
Also, included on the DVD is an insightful feature with the band discussing in great detail the making of this historic CD. This is a must have for any metal fan, old school

"This pedal is built for action," declares Mustaine. "With my personal sound effects and a large expression pedal modeled after the accelerator of one of my favorite cars onboard, the G2.1DM leaves all contenders at the starting line." For more information, visit

Songs: The Iceman Has Risen, Choosers of the Slain, Bitter Harvest, Deutschland, After Forever, The Battle of Lechfeld, Berkserkr, Southern Vision, Got What It Takes, Justice, Across the Desert Sands
    From the back cover:
DO RIGHT AND FEAR NO ONE
The wisdom of a thousand generations slumbers within you.
Wake it, and you will have found the key
which will open the gate of your deepest aspirations...
This is driving beat rock and roll. The lead singing is often of the growling timbre. From the song "Got What It Takes":
...What kind of curse has been cast
    Upon our people today?
It seems the minds of our youth
    Have been eaten away
Our elders are corrupt and weak
The sane are stifled when they stand to speak
How much more of this madness are we able to take?...
This refrain from "Southern Vision" is one I appreciate:
    a Vision for the Future
Based on the Lessons of the Past...

    By Thomas S. Orwat, Jr.
After two overly ambitious, but commercially disappointing concept records, Blackie Lawless and WASP have decided to strip it down and release a straight forward 9 track( two are cover songs) CD. Fans wanting a return to the classic stylings of early WASP, will be a bit disappointed. Lets face it, WASP will never sound like they did in the early 80's. However, this CD shows that Lawless and company are still musically relevant and making better music than many current artists. This just isn't the groundbreaking CD that many had hoped for, or one that will bring in any new fans.

Puddle Of Mudd - Volume 4: Songs In The Key Of Love And Hate

Review - Deb Rao
Puddle Of Mudd return with a very strong showing on their fourth release Volume 4: Songs In The Key Of Love And Hate. Although the genre of grunge rock has disappeared, one band keeping the vibe alive is Puddle Of Mudd. They say there is a fine line between love and hate and Puddle Of Mudd inflinct their torrid anquish views of love gone bad relationships in a captivating post grunge setting admist ferocious guitar chords and singer Wes Scantlin sexually driven lyrics.

Opening track "Stoned" sets the mood unleashing the Spartan guitar chords, as Wes sings,"Check your attitude at the door, I am thinkin' I rather be stoned." As the charasmatic singer sings about the aggravations of everyday life from everything to politics to love.

The first single of the album,"Spaceship" takes you to another planet full of beautiful women aliens and the sexually explicit lyrics. Wes Scantlin wastes no time in cutting right to the chase, as he sings "Let's get it over and just get naked". Life is short right? This song has been burning up the FM radio stations. Be sure to check out the Spacesip video at www.myspace.com/puddleofmudd  to get the full effect of the song.

Volume 4: Love Songs In The Key Of Love And Hate, finds the band returning to their grunge roots. Nothing pretenious here. The bands latest release is less commercial than their previous Famous and I think that is why most of the songs stand on their own. Puddle Of Mudd sing of every day emotions and real life. One of the gems on the album is the ballad "Keep It Together", a song about long distance relationships. The guitar melody is very beautiful and Wes sings with much emotion. The song "Out Of My Way"reflects the love gone wrong vibe of the album.

Puddle Of Mudd return to their punk/grunge roots on "Blood On the Table" and "Pitchin A Fit."  For anyone who ever lost somewhere,"Better Place" really strikes a sad chord with its poignant lyrics.

The album ends on a high note with the schoolboyish song "Hooky". It takes you back to when life was simple and free with no obligations. One interesting aspect of this album is that it seemed the band went into the studio and cranked out an album filled with no filler tracks in such a short period of time. I have to say the CD hasn't left my player since I received it Christmas Day.

The difference between the Nirvana and Puddle Of Mudd, is that this album leaves you feeling good upon listening. Some songs such as "Spaceship" and "Stoned"  on the album have that party vibe that makes you want to dance. The Alice In Chains/Ramones guitar riffs never let up and it is great to hear the band so exhilarated.  Be sure to check out Puddle Of Mudd live in concert this Winterrpi

John Michael "Ozzy" Osbourne (born 3 December 1948) is an English singer-songwriter and occasional actor, whose career has spanned over 40 years. As of December 2010, Osbourne has sold over 100 million albums worldwide.[1]
Osbourne rose to prominence as lead vocalist of the pioneering English heavy metal band Black Sabbath, a band whose radically different, intentionally dark, doom sound spawned the heavy metal genre. In his subsequent solo career Osbourne achieved a multi-platinum status in addition to the one he had earned with Black Sabbath.[2] These things are what led Osbourne to become known as the "Godfather of Heavy Metal".[3] It was during his Sabbath days that, due to their dark style of music, Osbourne became known as the "Prince of Darkness".[4] Osbourne has over 15 tattoos, the most famous of which are the letters O-Z-Z-Y across the knuckles of his left hand. This was his first tattoo, created by himself as a teenager with a sewing needle and pencil lead.[5]
In the early 2000s, Osbourne's career expanded to a new medium when he became a star in his own reality show, The Osbournes, alongside wife/manager Sharon and two of their three children, Kelly and Jack.

KISS - "Sonic Boom"

By Bruce Forrest
It's been 11 years since the KISS-loyal have received any new music from the band. Their last outing, the dismal Psycho Circus, was nothing to cheer about, especially considering it was a reunion of the 4 original members.
With guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer now in the fold, alongside original members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, this line-up has finally entered the studio, for two apparent reasons. The first being, their upcoming 35th Anniversary Tour. The other would be, to justify their inclusion of Thayer and Singer. You see, the KISS fans are none too happy to see these two wearing the iconic makeup designs of original members Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. Simmons and Stanley, have been promising us, the fan-faithful, something that would satisfy our musical taste buds. Their claim is that we would get, with this new album, something resembling vintage KISS.

I approached Sonic Boom, KISS' 19th studio album, cautiously. After all, Gene and Paul made tremendous promises back in 1981 with The Elder, and we all know how that turned out.

So, how the is the album? Well, it isn't as dynamic or heavy as Creatures of the Night, one of their finest outings. Sonic Boom sounds closer to studio out-takes of Animalyze, or Asylum, rather than the equivalent of Love Gun, or Rock and Roll Over's finer songs. Overall Sonic isn't all that impressive, yet, it isn't all that bad, either.

KISS fans will definitely scrutinize this album, more so than any other fanbase. While fans of other bands will simply "accept" an album by their favorite band, KISS fans are known to tear things to shreds, and expect more. We are a strange breed, I guess.

The CD kicks off with Modern Day Delilah. It is merely an adequate tune, nothing groundbreaking, yet nothing horrendous. It is followed by Russian Roulette.  Gene of course, has to get his 2c worth in, even though he has had nothing worth contributing to the band for quite some time. It is predictable--the same old arrogant, egotistical lyrics he typically writes.

Never Enoughshould rattle the fans. Not because it is an amazing tune (it isn't), but for the fact, it is a blatant rip-off of Poison's Nothing But a Good Time. Hasn't Paul heard that tune? Or did he simply think no one  would notice? The resemblance is way too uncanny, to forgive it's shortcomings.
I won't list every track here; no matter what I say, the listener is still going to give them a listen, and judge for themselves. The production, by Stanley, is quite good. The bass is absolutely cranium-bashing, for starters. Thayer proves he is more than capable, handling the lead guitar duties. And what can you say about veteran Eric Singer? He is dynamic, to say the least. It would be a shame if the fans insist on rejecting these two guys; accept the fact Ace and Peter are gone, and, for goodness sakes, give these two their dues. After all, you can't blame them for accepting the job.

For the most part, the songs are, to a degree catchy, but yet not enough to become classics.  There isn't a single track here along the lines of Strutter, Love Gun, or even Lick It Up.  Overall, `Sonic Boom merely serves to, somewhat, stifle the fans, at least for now.

KISS definitely won't draw in any new fans, much like Aerosmith has done in the past. The Masked Maraduers appeal to a select few--you either love them, or hate them. There is no middle ground. Sonic Boom is for KISS fans, and KISS fans only.

So, have Gene and Paul delivered on their promise?
Well, Sonic... satisfies to an extent, but leaves you wanting more.  You can't help but wish, they had tried a little harder. It is an effort that is almost there, but yet, not quite. Simmons seems to take up space with his contributions, which, as said before, are merely musical extensions of his ego. KISS has always believed, whatever they put out, their fans will enjoy. This is where the band is out of touch. They don't seem aware that, we will tear every track apart, note for note.  They almost hit the mark here, but seemed to get a little sloppy, in some regards. I think had KISS written and released this material, back when Bruce Kulick was in the band, they would have had a better grip on their success.

Considering it will probably be the last studio outing we will ever get from KISS, Sonic Boom seems, for the most part, to do the job, fairly well. It could be better, but, hey, it could have been extremely worse. This is no Destroyer, but it isn't The Elder, either.

Metallica (pronounced /məˈtælɨkə/ ( listen)) is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1981.
The band was founded when James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that drummer Lars Ulrich had posted in a local newspaper. The current line-up features long-time lead guitarist Kirk Hammett (who joined the band in 1983) and bassist Robert Trujillo (a member since 2003) alongside Hetfield and Ulrich. Notable previous members of the band include former lead guitarist Dave Mustaine (who later went on to found the band Megadeth) and former bassists Ron McGovney, Cliff Burton and Jason Newsted. The band also had a long collaboration with producer Bob Rock, who produced all of the bands albums between 1990 and 2003 and served as a temporary bassist between the departure of Newsted and the hiring of Trujillo.
Metallica's early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed the band as one of the "big four" of the thrash metal subgenre alongside Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax, during the genre's development into a popular style.[1] The band earned a growing fan-base in the underground music community and critical acclaim, with its third album Master of Puppets (1986) described as one of the most influential and "heavy" thrash metal albums. Metallica achieved substantial commercial success with their eponymous fifth album (also known as The Black Album), which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. With this release the band expanded its musical direction resulting in an album that appealed to a more mainstream audience.
In 2000, Metallica was among a number of artists who filed a lawsuit against Napster for sharing the band's copyright-protected material for free without any band member's consent.[2] A settlement was reached, and Napster became a pay-to-use service. Despite reaching number one on the Billboard 200, the release of St. Anger alienated many fans with the exclusion of guitar solos and the "steel-sounding" snare drum. A film titled Some Kind of Monster documented the recording process of St. Anger and the tensions within the band during that time.
Metallica has released nine studio albums, three live albums, two extended plays, 24 music videos, and 45 singles. The band has won nine Grammy Awards, and has had five consecutive albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200,[3] making Metallica the first band to do so; this record was later matched by the Dave Matthews Band.[4] The band's 1991 album, Metallica, has sold over 15 million copies in the United States, and 22 million copies worldwide, which makes it the 25th-best-selling album in the country.[5] In December 2009, it became the best-selling album of the SoundScan era, surpassing 1997's Come On Over by country artist Shania Twain.[6] The band has sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide as of the release of their latest album, Death Magnetic. As of December 2009, Metallica is the fourth best-selling music artist since the SoundScan era began tracking sales on May 25, 1991, selling a total of 52,672,000 albums in the United States alone.[7]The Nw York Times described Rammstein's music as a "powerful strain of brutally intense rock... bringing gale-force music and spectacular theatrics together".[32] The members have not been shy about courting controversy and have periodically attracted condemnation from morality campaigners. Till and Flake's stage act earned them a night in jail in June 1999 after a liquid-ejecting dildo was used in a concert in Worcester, Massachusetts. Back home in Germany, the band has faced repeated accusations of fascist sympathies because of the dark and sometimes militaristic imagery of their videos and concerts, including the use of excerpts from the film Olympia by Leni Riefenstahl in the video for the Depeche Mode cover "Stripped". Their cover of their debut album Herzeleid, released in Germany in 1995, showed the band members bare-chested in a style that resembled Strength Through Joy in the eyes of some critics, who accused the band of trying to sell themselves as "poster boys for the Master Race".[33] Rammstein have vigorously denied this and said that they want nothing to do with politics or supremacy of any kind. Christian "Flake" Lorenz, annoyed by the claim, has remarked that it is just a photo, and should be understood as such. Herzeleid has since been given a different cover in North America, depicting the band members' faces. The clip for the song Amerika shows people from different nationalities throughout the video and Rammstein members taking photographs with them at the end of the clip.
The song "Links 2-3-4" (Links being German for "left") was written as a riposte to these claims. According to Kruspe, it means, "'My heart beats on the left, two, three, four'. It's simple. If you want to put us in a political category, we're on the left side, and that's the reason we made the song".[34] On the other hand, this is also an allusion to a military marching cadence since "Links-2-3-4" is typically heard during marching practice in the German army with "links" referring to the left foot. The song is also a reference to the saying "the heart beats left", repeatedly used by Oskar Lafontaine, a famous former member of the SPD (Social Democratic Party of Germany), who was the co-chairman of the Left Party (Die Linke), and almost the title of a book written by him (the title is Das Herz schlägt links instead of Mein Herz schlägt links – "The heart beats left" instead of "My Heart beats left").[35][36]
According to the German online music magazine[37] Rammstein, through this song, positioned themselves on the side of Oskar Lafontaine. They write:[38]
(Rammstein embed the Lafontaine saying My heart beats left into their lyric and cite a line of an old Hannes Wader workers' song ("Left, 2, 3, 4; left 2, 3, 4; where your place is comrade, line up into the Workers' United Front, if you are a worker").)
Christian "Flake" Lorenz recently stated in an online chat that the song was created to show that the band could write a harsh, evil, military-sounding song without being Nazis.[39]

Rammstein were cited in relation to the Columbine High School Massacre in 1999, when photos of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold wearing Rammstein T-shirts were revealed.[40][41] Though there was no evidence to correlate the two events, the band felt obliged to issue a statement:
"The members of Rammstein express their condolences and sympathy to all affected by the recent tragic events in Denver. They wish to make it clear that they have no lyrical content or political beliefs that could have possibly influenced such behaviour. Additionally, members of Rammstein have children of their own, in whom they continually strive to instill healthy and non-violent values".
Coincidentally, on September 10, 2001 the single and video clip of Ich will ("I Want") was released which portrays the band as bank robbers who want to get a message across and receiving a Goldene Kamera (Golden Camera) award, a German version of the Emmy award, for their "actions". In the United States the video clip was broadcast only late at night after the attacks of September 11, 2001 in New York City although many media officials and politicians requested the video to be pulled from broadcast completely.[42]
Following the conclusion of the Beslan school hostage crisis in Russia in September 2004, the Russian authorities claimed that the terrorists had "listened to German hard rock group Rammstein on personal stereos during the siege to keep themselves edgy and fired up".[43] The claim has not been independently confirmed.

"There's been a lot of talk about that, but if there are radical feelings in people anything can wake them – a painting, a picture, whatever. It's just a coincidence that it happened to be our music. It's important to think about what caused them to make their decisions, how they became animals, not their taste in music. Pekka-Eric Auvinen, the perpetrator of the Jokela school shooting in November 2007, also included Rammstein in one of his favorite bands. He noted, though, that the music among other things was not to blame for his decisions.[45]MARILYN MANSON
Brian Hugh Warner (born January 5, 1969), better known by his stage name Marilyn Manson, is an American musician and artist known for his controversial stage persona and image as the lead singer of the eponymous band, Marilyn Manson. His stage name was formed from juxtaposing the names of two 1960s American cultural icons, namely, actress Marilyn Monroe and convicted multiple murder mastermind[3] Charles Manson as a critical and, simultaneously, laudatory appraisal of America and its peculiar culture.[4][5] He has a long legacy of being depicted in the media as a detrimental influence on young people. The seemingly outrageous styles for which he models and the controversy surrounding his lyrics have led to his very pronounced public appeal.[6]

The top metal songs of 2010 feature veteran thrashers and rockers sharing space with bands that are part of the new wave of metal. Without a doubt, everyone is ratcheting up the intensity of their favorite art form -- but even louder and faster. So let the headbanging begin: As rated by AOL Radio listeners, here are this year's acclaimed metal hits, so far.Thirty years and 15 albums in, New Jersey's Overkill are still proudly waving the metal flag. Of course, they painted it in their favorite color scheme of green and black. They love it so much they've used it in their logo for decades, and now they've even written a song about it. This Erie, Pa., band's emphasis on strong, more traditional melodies and slightly more accessible music helps them stand out from the metalcore crowd. Tim Lambesis from As I Lay Dying helped produce their new album, 2010's 'Eternal,' and like AILD, War of Ages use their love of heavy metal to spread the word about their religious beliefs.
Plagues of madness, vile disturbances, gripping sieges, banners of hate, massing hordes and towering sorrow. If everything Immmolation are warning us about here, in this title track, is truly right around the corner, then tomorrow's really gonna suck.
With help from Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy, the California-based hard rock band proves there is life for them, creatively, after the untimely loss of original drummer James 'The Rev' Sullivan. In fact, they don't hesitate to get right into matters of life and death -- warning a wrongdoer he'll soon reap what he sows on this title track from their new album.
Founding member Dino Cazares rejoins the band for the first time in nearly a decade, bringing in Strapping Young Lad drummer Gene Hoglan for the 'Mechanize' project. The album proves that Cazares' and Bell's time apart hasn't kept them from being able to write top metal songs, as shown on this ferocious, guitar-penetrating title track.
Former Sepultura frontman Max Cavalera continues pushing heavy metal into exciting new directions with the seventh album from his other, not-so-new-anymore band. For this revenge-obsessed song, he mixes tribal drums with sitars and bleeping, electronic sounds that somehow manage to sound completely sinister. This hard-rock supergroup's sound may be positively laid-back and soulful compared to other top metal songs on this chart. But make no mistake, these Southern boys came to kick ass. The music brings about an exuberant ruckus, even when the lyrics talk about an unrepentant, "no regrets" suicide note. The Knoxville, Tenn., deathcore band's 2010 album, 'A New Era in Corruption,' may appear to be without a strict, unifying lyrical concept. However, this song's warning -- about increased corruption undermining today's society -- echoes themes repeated throughout the entire album. The song also casts a negative light on the rehabilitative effects of prison systems, arguing that they just breed more vengeance
The power of the almighty riff compels Hatebreed's Jamey Jasta and Down's Kirk Windstein to join forces again for the long-awaited second album ('Behind the Blackest Tears') from their side band. We're not sure what monuments have been reduced to ash, exactly, but in their eyes it's a clear-cut case of censoring the past and, judging by their anger, is totally uncool.

Here is some info about it: “..Nugent has also apologised to Native Americans for the atrocities committed against their people, including Little Big Horn and other acts. In turn, Nugent has been accepted as an honourary member of the Sioux community, and occasionally goes by the name Little Long Dick. Wandering Bear commented: “He is quite the diplomat.”
In my opinion the *few* positives that Ted Nugent brings to the table are overshadowed/outweighed by his sensationalist/outlandish,politically correct, weird behavior/actions.He’s like a loud mouthed, dirty, filthy, longhaired version of that creep Ted Turner.

That type of talk, delivered to audience members who have been drinking, could spark a confrontation between audience members. Does the venue have a plan for how to handle that? What about a venue’s employees — should they be expected to work in that environment?
And then for the local crowd to cheer Nugent’s remarks? It is an outrage and embarrassment.
Allow me to be the first to congratulate both Ted Nugent and the residents of Dubuque!
Ted Nugent did nothing wrong, and the crowd was right to show their gratitude! It was probably the first time in their lives they had ever been called anything other than evil “racists.”
What was the Motor City Madman supposed to say? That he hated all the White people who bought tickets to his concert? And what were the patrons of his performance supposed to do? Boo themselves for being White? This is what the media believes. Thankfully, we’ve found a White entertainer and some White fans who aren’t eaten up with the same self-hate that afflicts the reporter from Iowa.
I wonder if it would have been so bad, in the reporter’s opinion, if a Black rapper had commented on how good it was to see so many Blacks in his audience. Of course, that really would have been an environment in which the venue’s employees should fear!

    Joe Perry- Have Guitar, Wil

I got an advance of the new Joe Perry Cd and all I can say is WOW! Some great tracks on here and four of them feature a new vocalist named Hagen. This kid sounds just like Steven Tyler at times.  I really think that some of the songs that Hagen sings on would of been great Aerosmith songs especially the first track "We've got a Long Way to Go.," and "Do You Wonder." Hagen and Perry seem to have a natural chemistry. If for some reason,Aerosmith can't continue, Perry should continue working with Hagen in the Joe Perry Project full time.
Now on the tracks that Perry sings lead vocals, while they are quite different stylistically, they do not sacrificing the continuity of the CD. If anything they make for an interesting musical journey.I don't know if it's just Perry's monotone vocals, but tracks such as "Slingshot,"  "Heaven and Hell" and "No Surprise" take a few listens to sink in, but once they do you can't forget them.
But the main reason anyone buys a Joe Perry Cd is for the guitar

After popping in the disc in and starting the main concert portion of the video (the concert is split into 2 parts, the first part being the complete "Rest In Peace" album in it's entirety, the second part is made up of "bonus" fan favorites performed from various other Megadeth releases), one thing was clear, not only is Megadeth's music timeless, but the band appears to be ageless!!

After watching this current lineup tear through song after song from "RIP," it reminded me of how important the bass guitar is to the songs on that album, and watching "Dave Jr." playing those bass parts, reminded me of how important he is to Megadeth.  I don't feel that the songs would have had the same level of authenticity without him, which really comes through, when watching and listening to this great DVD.
Speaking of authenticity, when Megadeth set out to do this tour, the band made a conscience effort to replicate everything from the original "RIP" tour, from the stage itself, to the attire the band members performed in.  From the Vic (Megadeth's album cover mascot) backdrop, to the radiation symbols on the bass drum heads, all the way to Mega Dave's bullet belt and wristbands, everything was almost identical to it's 1990 counterpart.
In addition to the live concert footage, the DVD includes behind-the-scenes footage, showing fans line up outside the legendary Hollywood Palladium - waiting to get into the concert, the band doing a photo shoot (which wouldn't be complete without Dave doing the classic Mustaine sneer) and the band rehearsing in their dressing room as they prepared to take the stage.
After watching the DVD, one cannot come away without being impressed at how perfect this live performance is.  You might question what amount of studio trickery was done when making this DVD, or is Megadeth just that good live?  I say they're just THAT good!!

The formermakeup they can plaster on their faces, this old school metal band could give you chills with a single riff. “Black Sabbath” or “War Pigs” may have a subtler approach to anything from Cradle of Filth or Deicide, but Iommi had an amazing way of taking you to the darkest (and coolest) places – and it’s still effective in 2008.
    # Slayer
Some people talk about the first time they ever heard The Beatles or The Rolling Stones, but it was hearing Slayer’s “South Of Heaven” that made a massive impression upon me. At the age of about 12, I was shocked and awed hearing Kerry King’s insanely cool intro riff blast through the car speakers.
It wasn’t necessarily fear that I was experiencing, but the proceeding songs I heard on the South of Heaven album were darker and more menacing than any of the benign hair metal I had been exposed to in the past. While Slayer’s purpose isn’t always to be intentionally scary, they hit the bull’s-eye with the Ed Gein-inspired track “Dead Skin Mask.” Even if it didn’t revolve around a serial killer, hearing the voice of a desperate victim crying out tends to be deeply unsettling.
    # King Diamond
The master of horror concept albums is none other than Kim Bendix Petersen, aka King Diamond. At the height of his dark creativity was the classic 1987 offering Abigail, which has everything you could want in a nightmarish bedtime story: witches, possession, and the trademark falsetto of a black metal icon.
In reality the present-day King Diamond leads far from a sinister life, and actually voiced his deep concern for the welfare of children in an interview with Ultimate-Guitar earlier this year. That being said, he still has the ability to chill musically, as is evident in his latest release, Give Me Your Soul…Please.
    Welcome To Their Nightmare
    # Marilyn Manson
Disturbing music videos in which torture devices are a highlight? Check. An album featuring the word “antichrist, ” complete with a pose on a crucifix? Check. Shoot a video in which you don a pair of fake breasts while simultaneously looking like an alien? Whoa, whoa, whoa – I’m not sure if that can count as scary…After further pondering, in Manson’s case, yes. Yes, it can. Marilyn Manson is an obvious choice, but the shock rocker vacates a well-deserved slot on our list. When it comes to producing a downright sacrilegious stage show or projecting haunting video images that will disturb you for weeks to come, Manson is your man. The shock factor has eased up over the years due to being overexposed and his latest album Eat Me, Drink Me was more seductive than scary, but we would probably be fools to think Manson doesn’t have at least a little more spookiness up his straitjacket.
    # Rammstein
Okay, a lot of us probably cracked a slight smile when conjuring up an image of the all-that-is-man ubergroup, Rammstein. The German natives walk a fine line between being an amusing topic of conversation and a truly frightening mass of testosterone. Either way, much of Rammstein’s music manages to create quite a dark mood.
Case in point is the song “Mein Teil” (often translated as “my part” or “my penis”), which tells the story of 2 men who cut off and subsequently cooked and ate another poor soul’s Johnson. Combine the story with the grinding guitars and the disturbingly hushed vocals of Till Lindemann, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a scary song.
    # Aphex Twin
While at first this artist (otherwise known as Richard David James) seems to just be laying down a random assortment of drum beats and samples to fit nameless-nightclub-number-whatever, it soon becomes obvious that Aphex Twin has more ominous intentions. With songs that feature lyrics such as “I want your soul; I will eat your soul, ” and an industrial-synth sound that often sounds like screaming banshees, James has mastered the art of creepiness. If you dare, check out the videos “Come To Daddy” and “Rubber Johnny.”
    # Cradle Of Filth
This British metal band has inched away from the black metal genre over the years, and some might say that its affect on the senses has lessened since that time. But going through the Cradle of Filth catalog, there is still some seriously eerie material. If you doubt they could deliver a sinister track, look no further than “Dinner At Deviant’s Palace.” The disquieting voice we hear is apparently guitarist Paul Allender’s son reading The Lord’s Prayer – in reverse, of course. The verdict is out as to whether Cradle of Filth can maintain the dark creativity, but we should find out this week when the latest album Godspeed on the Devil’s Thunder is released. Vocalist Dani Filth has said that “everyone who has heard this album has bruised their jaws on the pentagram-bejeweled floor.” A bejeweled pentagram? Well, count me in.
    # Stalaggh/Gulaggh
Is it music? That’s up for debate, but whatever we hear on the Stalaggh (now defunct) and Gulaggh recordings is raw, brutal, and emotionally draining. The Dutch, possibly Belgian anonymous musicians behind the projects are surrounded in an air of mystery and have used mental patients and screaming children to provide the vocals in their “songs.” Don’t expect these guys to show up and impress you with a creepy stage show, either. After all, they’ve stated in a past interview, “Concerts make people socialize and that is not to be supported.”
    # Mayhem
There are black metal bands that chill with a melody and others that captivate audiences with a ghoulish wardrobe. Then there is Mayhem. This Norwegian band could probably be considered one of the most sinister groups in black metal or among humans in general. While Mayhem’s music had all the ingredients for the best in metal, their taste for evil got the best of them.
With frontman Dead committing suicide, guitarist Euronymous allegedly eating part of Dead’s body, and bassist Count Grishnackh eventually murdering Euronymous, Mayhem is possibly the most terrifying band ever to walk the Earth.
    # Khanate
If you like your metal equivalent to that of a deranged horror film, look no further than Khanate. Although the quartet disbanded back in 2006, they still managed to produce some seriously disturbing material during the 5 years they were together. The tempos are achingly slow, vocalist Alan Dubin sounds like some sort of pissed-off goblin, and the guitars groan with a thick layer of feedback. In summation, Khanate is the perfect Halloween soundtrack if you desire to scare the crap out of children.
    Lucifer’s Spawn or Just Loveable?
    # Alice Cooper
Back in the early 1970s, Alice Cooper paved the road for all shock rockers with his blacked-out eyes, marionette-like mouth creases, and shows featuring the likes of guillotines and dancing teeth. His songs never quite matched the horror that his image conveyed, but Marilyn Manson still owes Cooper a big thank-you for the inspiration.
The shock had all but disappeared when Cooper appeared in Wayne’s World as the resident expert on the Indian root meaning of “Mil-wau-kee,” but that’s not such a bad thing. Not only have we gained an entertaining screen actor, rumor has it that Cooper is one hell of a golfer as well.
    # Ozzy Osbourne
Yes, we already mentioned Black Sabbath in the Classic Terror category, but Ozzy has evolved into a completely unique entity as a solo artist. If you were walking and talking in the 1980s, you won’t be forgetting the bat incident anytime soon. When Ozzy took a big ol’ bite into a bat that was thrown onstage during the Bark At The Moon Tour, that incident seemed to seal the deal on the frontman’s spawn of Satan claim – or more accurately, his monstrous drug problem. Fast forward to 2008 and Ozzy is still a force with which to be reckoned. Of course, now the self-proclaimed Prince Of Darkness is pushing 60 and it’s hard to not be entertained by every word (or vague utterance) that Ozzy makes. Hey, the man’s a reality TV star, a family man, and part Energizer Bunny – after all, he’s still holding his own with the likes of Zakk Wylde every year.
    # Gwar
If we went by looks alone, Gwar would have earned a special slot at the top of the list. Of course, every time Oderus Urungus utters a cornball line (particularly when on Jerry Springer or the now defunct Joan Rivers Show), it’s hard to see the horror behind the humor. Given the fact that we’ve had a couple of decades to get used to the whole notion of Gwar, it does seem the scariest part about the sci-fi inspired band might be its stage shows.
That favorite T-shirt of yours won’t survive all the decapitated heads and slain dinosaurs, which will undoubtedly ooze gallons of delightful Gwar juice. Um, I mean bloodman has been highly criticized over his career, mostly due to rumors denouncing him as a psychopath and Satanist. Despite his reputation, no one could deny that Osbourne has had an immeasurable effect on heavy metal. While he doesn't possess a great voice, he makes up for it with his good ear and dramatic flair. As a showman, his instincts are nearly as impeccable; his live shows have been overwrought spectacles of gore and glitz that have endeared him to adolescents around the world. Indeed, Osbourne has managed to establish himself as an international superstar, capable of selling millions of records with each album and packing arenas across the globe, capturing new fans with each recordse bass parts, reminded me of how important he is to Megadeth.  I don't feel that the songs would have had the sOzzyame level of authenticity without him, which really comes throu

Any Metalhead will attest, (from what we can recall), that they had a pretty darn good time back in the ’80′s, so did Ron Keel. This man has seen and done it all – musician, vocalist, song writer, lyricist, composer… and he is still writing his own legacy in 2010. Ron’s most famous band KEEL not only jumped on board the Heavy Metal explosion of those colorful ’80′s, the original lineup is back for another hard and heavy go round with their loyal fans… both old school and new. Ron Keel is a smitten guy these days and there is more to this Heavy Metal veteran, more to this man, once you take in what he has to say. Oh, Ron Keel does have a lot to say too, taking the time out of his busy schedule to talk to Hard Rock Hideout recently. With the new KEEL album Streets of Rock & Roll, (released February 9, 2010), receiving it’s just praise from around the Heavy Metal and Hard Rock circles, concerts being aligned in support of this album and the KEEL NATION rising, Ron Keel is a man that is busy, happy and proud to be alive! Ron is excited about the present, reflects on the past, looks more to the future, holds friendship sacred, values his fans, respects and cares about the American troops both past and present, has a charitable heart, reveals his Heavy Metal and Hard Rock dreams and also has a message for The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Walmart too… (phew), check it out: HRH: So, Ron, how are Native American apologist,a White guilt tripping, red man butt kisser too! Here is some info about it: “..Nugent has also apologised to Native Americans for the atrocities committed against their people, including Little Big Horn and other acts. In turn, Nugent has been accepted as an honourary member of the Sioux community, and occasionally goes by the name Little Long Dick. Wandering Bear commented: “He is quite the diplomat.” In my opinion the *few* positives that Ted Nugent brings to the table are overshadowed/outweighed by his sensationalist/outlandish,politically correct, weird behavior/actions.He’s like a loud mouthed, dirty, filthy, longhaired version of that creep Ted Turner. 02.01: This day in 2004 is a day that will go down in infamy, as the day our fragile puritanical psyche was forever scarred, as the day our collective innocence was brutally taken from us, as the day Justin Timberlake helped Janet Jackson thrust her breast upon an unsuspecting world during the Super Bowl halftime show. Oh, our eyes! They're burning! Not boobies! How will we explain this to our children? We won't, of course. We'll keep them innocent and unready for the world. We'll just make sure to punish those who let this happen, those who broadcast this, those who might possibly think about craft.

Musings On Music History: Joplin Joins Us, Ozzy Loves Animals, and The Rise And Fall of Studio 54

    Posted on januari 17, 2011
01.18: To tell yet another little tale from the days of disco, we bring you the soaring and sad tale of one Studio 54, perhaps the most famous club in the history of NYC. Every time you watch a documentary about disco or about New York in the late '70s, you hear about Studio 54, about its bacchanalian days of sex, drugs, celebrities, and disco, about the hordes of people attempting entry into its maw, into its pleasure-filled space. Opened in 1977, the club became an immediate hit with celebrities, jet-setters, and ordinary people alike. When Bianca Jagger (Mick's then-wife) rode through the club on a white horse for her 32nd birthday, people wanted a piece of that, wanted to be there just in case they might see something like that, wanted to be a part of something bigger than anything else New York City had to offer at the time. Well, besides the rise of punk at CBGB in the West Village or hip-hop in the Bronx, but those are two entirely different stories, kids, and those two movements, which would leave far more of an impression than disco could ever dream of, received far less press and media attention than the drug-fueled insanity of Studio 54 and disco. Imagine that. Something real and based in human emotion being trumped in the media by a hyped-up, seen-and-be-seen, flash-in-the-pan party. But we digress. On this day in 1980, disco's beating heart seized and collapsed when the owners of Studio 54 were sent to prison for 3½ years, though they only served 13 months, for tax evasion. The club failed to survive their loss. They'd been skimming off the top for years, failing to pay taxes on much of the club's profit, and the IRS eventually came a callin', especially after Steven Rubell, the face of the club, repeatedly boasted in the press about how much money the operation pulled in. Not smart, Steven, not smart at all. The building was sold in 1981 and reopened under the Studio 54 moniker, but nothing could touch the debaucherous good times oft told about the original incarnation. 01.19: Janis, Janis, Janis…..what have you done to us? Janis Lyn Joplin, you totally captured our soul with your bourbon-and-cigarette-soaked voice, your hippy-dippy ways, with "Me and Bobby McGee." Then, you ripped out our heart with your self-destructive ways, your thirsty liver. That doesn't mean, though, that we won't celebrate your life whenever we get the chance. Like today, for instance. On this day in 1943, your presence on Earth became reality and we just wanted to wish you a happy birthday. We wish we could do it in person. You'd be 68 today. That would've been awesome. Alas, 'twas not to be. Like all the greats who have gone away, however, we're thankful for what you left us, for those songs we can throw on anytime, remembering the musical goddess that walked amongst us. 01.19: Dolly Parton strutted her stuff for the first time on this day in 1946, bringing her sassy charm, homespun down-to-earth ways, and prodigious, uh, talents to the kind folks of Tennessee. Growing up dirt poor (her words, not ours) with eleven siblings in a one-room cabin in the Smokey Mountains couldn't have been easy, but Dolly's always given credit where credit's due, noting that without the life, circumstances, and family into which she was born she would not have the successful life she's lived for the past 65 years. Get this, people, you's about to get some learnin'. Dolly Parton has had 25 #1 singles and 42 Top Ten albums in her amazing and insanely prolific career. She is, hands down, one of the most successful female performers of all time. She might perform mostly country and bluegrass, but in our book she rocks pretty damn hard. 01.20:You might look at Ozzy Osbourne these days and think he's pretty tame, that he wouldn't harm a fly. But this is the Ozzy of the new millennium. This is the Ozzy of reality show fame/infamy, the Ozzy of cell phone commercials and marble-mouthed mumbles. It wasn't so long ago that many considered Ozzy a very dangerous man. Parents' groups denounced him as Satanic, saying that he wrote and performed music that made people want to kill themselves. His drug use and alcoholism didn't put him in many people's good graces, either, especially when he tried to strangle his wife, when he was arrested for urinating on the Alamo while wearing a dress, or when he went on a rampage and shotgunned all the family pets. Suffice it to say, most animal rights groups didn't take kindly to many of Ozzy's antics. Once, he bit a dove's head off during a meeting at his record company. What was a dove doing at the meeting, you ask? Well, Ozzy and Sharon, his wife, had planned on releasing a couple doves as a symbol of something or other, but Ozzy felt that their gesture of good will didn't receive the attention from the execs he was looking for. So, instead of just letting it go, he grabbed a bird and bit down, forever scarring some poor, innocent record company suits. Which brings us to this day in 1982, to a concert in Des Moines, Iowa, when Ozzy bit the head off another animal. This incident wasn't quite as blatant as the dove lunch he'd enjoyed, but, during the concert, someone tossed a bat onto the stage. Ozzy thought it was a rubber toy, so he did what any sane, head-biting person would do and bit its head off. Unbeknownst to him, until right after the bat bit him as he was biting it, the bat was real. Another animal fell to the power of the Mad Man. Some claim the bat was dead when it was tossed on stage, but Ozzy insists it was alive. We're not so sure of this because wouldn't it fly away after it'd been tossed, if it were alive? We're just sayin. Anyway, the Ozzman cometh and he is hungry, people. Lock up the cats, hide the birds, and don't make any sudden moves. That mumble-mouthed old rocker isn't as harmless as he appears. 01.23: On this day in 1953, Robin Zander, lead singer of the cheapest trick in all the land, Cheap Trick, was born. Actually, they're not that cheap. They owned the airwaves in 1979, with their still very catchy, and somewhat pleading, song "I Want You To Want Me." You've heard it, you know it, you love it. Admit it, you've actually tried to pick up someone with that song, singing it as you pass them in the hallway at school or the office, hoping they'd pick up on your awesomeness. No? Just us? Oh, well, that doesn't diminish our love for Cheap Trick, for their late '70s porn-stache, their wavy and pretty hair, and their general disregard, even for the times, of all things cool. We think that's why we like them so much. Cuz they just don't care. All they want is for you to want them. That's what we all just want, though, isn't it?
Now on the tracks that Perry sings lead vocals, while they are quite different stylistically, they do not sacrificing the continuity of the CD. It has long been known that the older generation has always been suspicious of those things that capture the attention of the younger generation. Some subcommunities forget faster than others, of course... Note that cultures confronting actual social problems or actual external enemies will tend to skip an iteration of the cycle. Scorpions are a hard rock band from Hannover, Germany, best known for their 1984 rock anthem “Rock You Like a Hurricane” and their singles “Wind of Change”, “No One Like You”, “Still Loving You”, and “Send Me an Angel”. The band has sold over 100 million records worldwide. Along with Metallica, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, KISS, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne and Deep Purple they are one of the most successfull hard rock/heavy metal acts and by far the most successful German Rock band in America and England. Rudolf Schenker, the band’s rhythm guitarist, explained iIn the beginning of our career, we had a problem in Germany because nobody expects a Germanith Rock music, there are more bands from England or America, which are more exotic than the Scorpions, who are from Germany. But when we went to America in ‘79, we became the exotic ones. They said, ‘Hey, what kind of crazy guys are these?’ (laughs) We were already exotic, with a different view, and we also play our Rock music with a little bit of an ethnic touch. You’ll notice that Americans come from the blues side, whereas we come from the classical side, which is different.”

The “Scorps” known to metal heads of the time, reminisce more of Lonesome Crow · Fly to the Rainbow · In Trance · Virgin Killer · Taken by Force · Lovedrive · Animal Magnetism. Only after the commercial success of “Blackout” did they start to get heavily pushed into the mainstream media of the U.S. market by Mercury records.

Manson formed Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids in Florida in 1989 (the name was shortened to Marilyn Manson in 1992). While with The Spooky Kids, he was involved with Jeordie White (also known as Twiggy Ramirez) and Stephen Gregory Bier Jr. (also known as Madonna Wayne Gacy) in two side-projects: Satan on Fire, a faux-Christian metal ensemble where he played bass guitar, and drums in Mrs. Scabtree, a collaborative band formed with White and then girlfriend Jessicka (vocalist with the band Jack Off Jill) as a way to combat contractual agreements that prohibited Marilyn Manson from playing in certain clubs. In the summer of 1993, the band drew the attention of Trent Reznor. Reznor produced their 1994 debut album, Portrait of an American Family and released it on his Nothing Records label. The band began to develop a cult following, which grew larger with the release of Smells Like Children in 1995. That EP yielded the band's first big MTV hit with "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)," a cover of the 1983 Eurythmics hit. Antichrist Superstar (co-produced by Trent Reznor) was an even greater success.[11]
In the US alone, three of the band's albums have been awarded platinum certification, three more gold, and the band has had five releases debut in the top ten, including two number-one albums. Manson first worked as a producer with the band Jack Off Jill. He helped name the band and produce most of the band's early recordings, and also played guitar on the song "My Cat" and had the band open most of his South Florida shows.[12] Manson later wrote the liner notes to the band's album Humid Teenage Mediocrity 1992-1995, a collection of early Jack Off Jill recordings. Manson has appeared as a guest performer on DMX's album Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood[13] and on Godhead's 2000 Years of Human Error album — the only album released on his vanity label Posthuman
